Aircraft Background Edit
Operational Requirement 330 (OR.330) started life as a 1954 requirement for a high altitude, high speed reconnaissance aircraft (R.156T). The mission would necessitate high altitude (70,000 ft) high speed (mach 2.5+) missions over enemy territory to gather radar intelligence. This aircraft was envisaged to partner the V-bomber force in target identification so a challenging in service date of 1960 was set for which a lesser specification would be allowed with plans to improve performance.
The Type 799 (also know as R.156T and SP.4) wing platform was finalised after studying more then 50 designs. The reward movement of the centre of lift in supersonic flight would have necessitated excessive trim on a normally placed horizontal stabiliser. Moving the stabiliser to the canard position reduced the drag and improved consequent fuel consumption by nearly 10%. The fins were moved to the outside of the wings to avoid disrupted air from the canards. The aircraft did not have a windscreen. A periscope was used for take-off and landing, and a side window could be opened if that failed!
Vickers calculated that minor reductions in the requirement would enable a far lighter and simpler aircraft to be made. Reducing the cruising speed from mach 2.5 to mach 2.3 reduced kinetic heating by approximately 50 degrees Celsius and allowed the use of aluminium alloy rather than heavier steel. A reduction in range from 4500 miles to 3500 miles could allow a 30% reduction in aircraft size and weight.
The gamble of alloy manufacture precluded the Type 799 at the first stage as it could never increase it’s speed. It’s range of 3000 miles was also inferior to the contract winning Avro 730’s 4250 miles. Soon after awarding the contract, the requirement was updated to include a bombing capability. The contract was scrapped with the Bristol 188 technology demonstrator flying, and the Avro 730 prototype half built.
