In 1947, the Air Ministry published requirement F.44/46 for a night fighter. Supermarine responded with the Type 511 in both a straight and swept wing configuration. Supermarine had been planning a swept wing 508 (the 525) for the naval development programme, and saw this as an opportunity to pitch a similar aircraft to the RAF.
It was was over 40% longer and had a 20% greater wing span than the 508. The increased length of the 511 enabled the housing of a rocker booster in the aft of the fuselage. The rocket assistance gave a sea level climb rate of 10,000 feet/minute and a time to 45,000 feet of just 8.6 minutes. The greater wingspan gave superior lift and high altitude performance.
The 511 never left the drawing board - the competition for the night fighter requirement was lost to the de Havilland DH.110. Problems with this aircraft would see Armstrong Whitworth upgraded Meteor NF.14 satisfying the requirement.
