Aircraft Background[]
Seaborne Harriers saw the ultimate incarnations of the first generation Harrier. The Royal Navy had been holding out for supersonic jets and large carriers, but the UK government had different (smaller) ideas to focus the Royal Navy on dominance of the North Atlantic rather than a true blue water navy. The official policy was to abandon aircraft carriers altogether, but the Royal Navy managed to get funding for 'through deck cruisers', that were officially helicopter carriers, but very soon became the home for the Sea Harrier.
The Sea Harrier was based on the GR3 with an elevated cockpit position to aid visibility in the fighter role, the incorporation of the Blue Fox navigation and weapons radar (the INS system could not work without a flight starting on solid ground) and being fabricated out of more corrosion resistant alloys.
The Sea Harriers entered UK folklore with their performance during the Falklands war - achieving 21 air-to-air kills with no air-to-air losses (2 lose to ground fire, 4 lost in accidents) against slightly superior aircraft and a comparably skilled air force. Whilst they could not achieve air supremacy, a CATOBAR carrier could not have been deployed in the heavy seas of the South Atlantic, so the Sea Harriers enabled the war to be fought and won.
