Aircraft Background Edit

After developing their VTOL credentials in the P1127 Kestrel, Hawker got on with building a 'real' VTOL military jet - the supersonic P1154. It was designed in response to NATO's requirement NBMR.3 and judged the best aircraft. It was equal winner of the requirement with the Mirage IIIv however; French proposals for multi national collaboration (?!!) won favour with the judges despite a weaker aircraft!

The aircraft featured an upgraded pegasus engine (BS100) featuring plenum chamber burning - after-burning the un-combusted compressed air-stream in the front nozzles. The UK Government managed to convince the RAF and RN to agree on a single aircraft type; the the RN proceeded with the development of the P1154RN two seat interceptor to replace the Sea Vixen; the RAF the single seat P1154 to replace the Hunter. It did not solve the design flaws with the P1127 airframe but a higher level and faster mission meant that these weaknesses were not as significant. It had a top speed of mach 2.4 at 36,000 feet and mach 1.4 at sea level.

The aircraft fell victim to the defense cuts in the mid 1960s. Fearing the the government would pull funding on the TSR2, the RAF pulled out leaving the RN to fund and absorb the development over less than half the forecast aircraft...The plane was cancelled in 1966 before the prototype was finished. The navy opted for the F-4J Phantom instead, and got their Sea Harrier 13 years later!
