Aircraft Background[]
Supermarine developed the laminar flow wing to improve the high speed capability of the Spitfire towards the end of WWII. To make production easier, this aircraft, the Spiteful, utilised a slightly modified Spitfire fuselage. The Spiteful was quickly overtaken by jet technology and only 17 were produced.
The laminar flow wing was very successful, and Supermarine proceeded with the design of the ‘Jet Spiteful’ for requirement E.10/44. The requirement was to introduce an interim aircraft to replace the Gloster Meteor whilst Gloster worked on the E.1/44. The E.1/44 project was stopped when the capability of the Meteor refinements exceeded expectations, and so E.10/44 was also cancelled.
The aircraft was modified and proposed to the Navy as the Attacker. 183 were built and the Attacker saw operational service with the Navy from 1951 to 1954 and also with the Pakistan Air Force.
The tail-wheel undercarriage made it difficult to land on carriers and it was superseded by the Sea Hawk and Sea Venom without seeing and combat action.
One Attacker survives in the Fleet Air Arm museum in Yeovilton.
