Aircraft Background[]
The successful proposals for the main V Bomber requirement, the Vulcan and Valiant, both incorporated untested wing shapes. To mitigate the risk, the Air Ministry ordered scale flying test bests for both aircraft. The Avro 707 series were 1:3 scale testbeds for the Vulcan. In a not unsurprising procurement process, the first 707 flew after the Vulcan's design was frozen and the production line had started; the last 3 707s out of the five produced flew after the Vulcan's first flight!!
The 707 did prove worthwhile however. The first two 707s were used for low speed and flight control testing. The third 707 started high speed trials and these trials identified limitations with the straight leading edge giving buffeting at high subsonic speeds. With 12 Vulcans already on the production line, a modified leading edge was designed and fitted to these and subsequent aircraft.
Further 707s and a 1:2 scale 710 were planned to support further research and pilot training. the Vulcan was however found to be simple to fly, so the training models were not required.
