Warton started life in 1940 as and RAF costal command base, however it was soon taken over by the USAF as a transport hub for the receipt of men and equipment. Preston based English Electric had started building aircraft in 1942 and flew out the finished products from Salmesbury. In 1947 English Electric acquired Warton from the RAF.
